We have provided a glossary of commonly used terminology throughout the site. We understand that not every guest on the site will have a background in environmental restoration or will be familiar with blockchain.
Restoration & Ecology Terms:
Biodiverse Ecosystems - Natural environments containing a wide variety of plant and animal species
Conservation Bank - Similar to a mitigation bank but focused on protecting endangered species habitat
Land Steward - An individual or organization responsible for managing and caring for land, often with conservation or restoration goals
Mitigation Bank - A site where wetlands, streams, or habitats are restored or preserved, generating credits that can offset environmental impacts elsewhere
Wetland Delineation - The process of identifying and mapping wetland boundaries based on vegetation, soil, and hydrology characteristics
Blockchain/Crypto Terms:
Blockchain - A digital ledger technology that records transactions across multiple computers in a way that makes the records permanent, transparent, and tamper-proof. Each "block" of information is linked to the previous one, creating a secure chain of data.
DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization) - An organization run through rules encoded in smart contracts on a blockchain, allowing for transparent, community-driven governance
Lift Token - OrennaDAO's environmental offset credit tied to verified restoration work
On-Chain - Information or transactions recorded directly on a blockchain, making them permanent and publicly verifiable
Smart Contracts - Self-executing agreements written in code on a blockchain. When predetermined conditions are met, the contract automatically executes the agreed-upon actions (like releasing payments or transferring tokens) without needing intermediaries.
Project/Finance Terms:
Environmental Offset Credit - A tradable certificate representing a measurable environmental benefit, used to compensate for negative impacts elsewhere
Third-Party Verification - Independent confirmation by qualified experts that restoration work meets stated goals and industry standards
